Generally it's the removal of the dictator from power, whether by resignation, war, death, exile or some other means. Once in power, a dictator usually does everything he can to prevent a move to democracy.
In a dictatorship, only one person's opinion matters. In a democracy, multiple people's opinions matter. As a result, you are more likely to have disagreement in a democracy than a dictatorship. This disagreement is usually termed as "gridlock" by those who are annoyed by it.
A free market economy would be more likely to be found in a democracy rather than a totalitarian dictatorship because it is is a market in which there is no economic intervention and regulation by the state, except to enforce private contracts.
I would say not really. But the bad democracy can progress where as the military rule will most likely become a terrible dictatorship and the democracy would (obviously) be better. This is my opinion.
