There are really two different phenomena that are called "nationalism".

1) Right-Wing Political Policy: Nationalism in a domestic political setting is a right-wing political position that strongly emphasizes national ethnic and social character against increasing liberalization and Immigration. Nationalists can often express racist or otherwise discriminatory attitudes towards minorities within their countries, up to and including, violent attacks. This form of nationalism is becoming increasingly popular in Europe as a number of European citizens believe that immigration is not being adequately dealt with by the current national governments.

2) Ethnic Self-Determination: Nationalism is a political philosophy that holds that a specific ethnic or social group deserves the right of self-determination as an independent country. There are numerous countries that exist today that were founded on the premise of nationalism, such as Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Poland, Israel, Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Macedonia, Thailand, Korea, etc.
