Moments of great triumph or despair tend to bring people together uniting them on a national level. Two examples I have experienced that stand out to me are the 1980 gold medal hockey team. When they beat Russia it was an incredible sense that vibrated across the country as our boys were the underdogs and they proved through teamwork that all things are possible.
The other was the events of 9/11. At the time I lived in Pennsylvania and was a lot closer to the events than I was comfortable. In spite of the death and destruction people all across the country pulled up stakes and left jobs behind to help in the recovery efforts.
There have been many other events that took place but these two were good examples of the good and the bad that help unite people to create the sense of nationalism.
