The Crusades were launched by the Popes (leaders of the catholic church). The European Kings' Armies March to Places that were occupied by Arab Tribes. The Crusades were unsuccessful, they ended giving more land to the Arabs. One of the only lasting resault was that Europe gained more technology.

Without them the world we live in today would most likely look quite different.While many died for what could be perceived as a religious-political power struggle on the part of the papacy the crusades were important. Europe would not have passed through the 2 renaissances it did (first being in early 12th century due to Norman conquest of Sicily and southern Italy). Europe benefitted hugely by making contact with the Islamic culture and receiving noteable technology and information from it.
