Not exactly. First World, Second World and Third World refer mainly to the industrial development and social advances within a country along with their political alignment during the period from 1946 to 1991 (Cold War period).

First World countries include most of Europe, Canada, Israel, the US, Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. (mainly those aligned with the US during the Cold War)

Second world nations are developed countries (as developed or nearly as developed as first world countries), politically they were aligned with the former Soviet Union during the cold war. Eastern Europe, Cuba, Russia and former soviet states, some Arab states, China and North Korea.

Some Second World Countries are listed under various categories as third world. Those categories are social, political, and economic development, human rights, and freedom of the press.

All underdeveloped countries are listed as third world. Not all African countries are third world. Africa has several "third" world nations, Undeveloped countries not in the first or second world category are listed as Third World. Africa however, though many of the countries may be listed as third world nations, many are not 1st, 2nd or 3rd world. Africa is NOT a political entity of itself and not as such a third world continent.
