Because the West has decided to remove the only obstacles from an excuse to fully invade the Middle East. First the West set up strong dictators, who in turn burtally suppressed their population which in turn increased extremism. Now the West has decided to support the extremists, in order to overthrow the dictators. Why? Once the extremist seize power and begin to cause chaos in the middle east, Israel will have the excuse needed to wage full out warfare on the countries. It may seem ludacris, but if you study history and know anything about the middle east, you know that this is exactly the kind of scenario which is bound to happen. I say let Assad stay, and should have let Ghadaffi stay as well.

Generally speaking, the US argument against Assad is his repressive character against his own people. While ISIL engages in routine brutality, e.g. numerous executions, slavery, etc., Assad does chemical attacks and larger scale massacres, just with a longer pause between these events. The US cannot in good conscience support one evil over the other. As a result, the US has tried to support the Free Syrian Army in order to put down Assad. (The Free Syrian Army is definitely a group of paramilitaries, but whether or not they are terrorists is a question of interpretation -- they generally do not target civilians.)Conversely, Russia wants to keep Assad in power because Russia has no objections to Assad's authoritarian measures and has agreements with Assad to maintain naval ports in coastal Syria.

Venezuela is not currently and under Chavez was also not financially supporting Assad, the "support" is ideological. Venezuela is simply choosing to stand with Iran and Assad because doing so puts them in an Anti-American coalition and Venezuela harbors antipathy towards the US because of historic US interference with Latin American politics and the US opposition to socialist regimes. Since Venezuela's support is non-monetary, it makes little sense to focus US policy on courting them to avoid Assad.
