Dictators were important in ancient Rome because they were appointed in times of crisis. Crisis is the key word. When there was a major crisis its solution was debated in the senate with all senators having the right to air their views. This could take days. (There were anywhere from five to six hundred senators, depending upon the time) So to avoid long drawn out, time consuming debates , the senate would vote to appoint a dictator with authority to solve the problem.

What was the important political leader of ancient Rome?

Over the long period of existence, ancient Rome had many important political leaders. It's a subjective question and based on what I have read about ancient Rome, I believe that Augustus Caesar was the most important political leader in ancient Rome's history. The reasons for my choice of Augustus are many fold. Foremost in my mind is this; After the Civil War with Mark Antony & Cleopatra, Octavian then known as, was the supreme leader of ancient Rome. He brought a great degree of stability to Rome compared to previous times. Augustus had flaws of course but I rank him as the most important leader.

Furthermore, the context of international relations and global interconnectedness today presents unique challenges and opportunities for modern dictators that were not present in ancient Rome.
