The oldest fossils known to man are stromatolites which are made by cyanobacteria and date back to over 3.2 billion years.

The stromatolites are accreted by the bacteria over many years to make dome shaped structures. These however are not the creatures themselves (some believe that cell like structures in the stromatolites are actual fossil bacteria but this is hotly debated).

The 1st definite multicelled fossils come from the Ediacara period (600-543 million years ago). It was named for the area in Australia in which the fossils were 1st found. Creatures such as Arkarua which was a disk shapped animal, the Tribrachidium Heraldicum which is possibly related to species such as jellyfish, corels, starfish and sea cucumbers and Spriggina which could possibly be an early arthropod.
