Sociology helps individuals understand themselves and others by providing insights into how social structures, institutions, and interactions shape behavior and identities. By studying societal norms, values, and practices, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of their own actions and beliefs, as well as the experiences of others from different social backgrounds. Sociology encourages critical thinking about the interconnectedness of individuals within larger social systems, leading to greater empathy and awareness of diverse perspectives.

The beauty of the social sciences is that they can be bridged to give one a more complete picture of how our societies are structured and how they operate. Political Science studies political structures, their foundations, and how they change over time. With this we can gain an understanding of how a societies political environment is composed and how it operates. Sociology studies societies, their social norms and values. Those who study this discipline attempt to explain how societies can influence and change our values over time. Political Science and Sociology can be bridged when one studies the various motives that influence the behavior of agents and actors. The field of Political Science has definitely drifted toward this type of research in the realms of Public Policy, Public Administration, etc. The study of Economics is that of how scarce resources are allocated and distributed. With this we can study markets and their behaviors, the economics of social issues or policies that a government implements. Economics draws on sociology in it's assumptions of rational buyers and sellers in a market. In the field of Game Theory a subset of Economics and Public Policy attempt to predict an agents choices given a certain scenario. There are many other fields within social sciences that allow us to understand our world and societies like History, Psychology, and Geography play a major role in understanding the many complex systems that operate in our world. With all of these tied together we can then determine a societies historical developments (politically, economically, etc.), it's location relative to other societies which would impact communication, trade, etc. We can also trace back moral and social developments over time; all of which allows us to better understand humans, society, and the relationships between the two. With that being said, most of these disciplines make assumptions of our world and attempt to predict and understand events that happen or have happened. That in my opinion is why social sciences contribute to our understanding of ourselves and society.

How do guilty persons live with themselves?

Some people, who are called "sociopaths," never feel guilt at all. So, obviously, even if they are guilty and understand how others could think them guilty, they have no problem whatsoever about that living with themselves. Some people who are guilty may not understand that they are guilty. So they, too, have no problem living with themselves even if they are guilty because they do not understand themselves to be guilty. Some people manage to live with themselves even if they are guilty and understand that they are guilty. Often, they make their situation easier either by minimizing its importance or by thinking that others share the guilt. Furthermore, they may simply forgive themselves. After all, we all make mistakes. So it's possible to be guilty, accept one's responsibility, and still continue living.
