Here are some ways to help someone else stay calm:

  • Keep in touch - putting a hand on their arm or shoulder helps because human touch reminds them they are not alone
  • Have them breathe deeply - it's not physically possible to panic when you are taking deep breaths!
  • Talk slowly and quietly - it doesn't really matter what you say so long as your voice is soothing and soft.

HOWEVER: Avoid saying things like "I know how you feel" or "calm down and relax" because that only makes them feel worse.
