When people are part of a group, they often experience a loss of self-awareness and individuality. Groups can generate a sense of emotional excitement, which can lead to behaviors that a person would not typically engage in. A group setting has people conform to behaviors that may not necessarily be acceptable.

How does mass hysteria get started?

Emotions often get the best of people and when they do, there is a thing called "mob mentality", which means that the first thing that they hear goes. If that is a really bad idea, mass hysteria may ensue.

What is Mob Hysteria?

How do Mobs form?

I recommend an older work on this topic; "The Crowd" by Gustave le Bon. He, like others since, postulate that a mob forms around a person or a singular event (in much the same way as a particle in a super-cold solution can make it harden instantly) which causes the formation of the mob. The mob follows it's own rules (like all chaotic 'systems') and they are almost never the rules of the individuals making up the group.

Why do people randomly start hating on you?

Answer:That depends, some people have insecurity problems that have nothing to do with you. It is their problem.Answer:Because they don't know that the problem is within themselves, these people will always hate you no matter what you do so, don't try to please them or make sense of it.Next answer:Because people are insecure and they pick on others in order to feel better about themselves. Forming social groups, cliques, is a sort of tribalism to separate "us" from "them". The separation can be a basis for mob behavior that would not normally be seen in those people on an individual basis.A clique may choose to harass another clique in order to create a commonality that defines them as a group. For example, Jets fans may hate Chargers fans because that's one of the things Jets fans do. Hating Chargers fans is one of the ways you establish that you belong to the "Jets fans" group.

What is a stereotype?

The usual/typical/expected way a specific type of people act like (ex. Muslims, Blacks, Whites, Homeless People, Rich People, People Who Live Near The Jersey Shore, etc.).It is usually offensive or racial to call someone a stereo type, because they are thinking that's how everyone act like who is the type/kind you are. Some expected ways how people act like is that Nerds like comic books, video games, or computers a lot.Or that saying all Emo kids cut themselves. Some People embrace their stereotypical ways but it would be best to treat them as an average person before knowing that rather then an image that you hear or see about.A a stereotype is a "widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing." For example many people see people of Asian ethnicity as being very smart, or that many Italians belong to a mob/gang. Many stereotypes can be very offensive to people.

In The Crucible who was the mob mentality?

The "mob mentality" theme in the crucible isn't necessarily one person it's the entire group, moving in an unorganized direction towards the same thing: burning people who may or may not have been witches. In the Crucible, you don't get to see where it really starts, but what you do see is the first person to actually name someone as a witch, Abigail. After Abigail, the accused accuse other people, those people accuse other people, etc., Thus leading to the "mob mentality" in The Crucible.Miller related the 1692 witch trials to his own life, when people were being persecuted because they were thought to be communists. In my opinion, the theme of mob mentality is more evident when you look at the comparison, maybe because it is on a larger scale. IE the whole country instead of one village. So, in short, the "mob mentality" in The Crucible isn't just one person, it's the entire village contributing.
