The debate over this question is as extensive as time itself. This is one phenomenon no one has been able to explain properly. There is a great deal of debate on both sides as one can easily see from a quick search on Google but in the end it all depends on how much weight you give to each argument. The advocates of free will state that at any given time a person is facing several different choices and whatever he/she chooses rests entirely upon the person itself. For example, at this moment I can choose to type this answer or sleep and I have decided to type the answer rather than sleep. It seems then as if every action is based upon one's individual thoughts at the moment, however the proponents of determinism state that it is because of some unbroken prior chain of events that caused me to decide what I had. Given that I have a history of not sleeping till late and busying myself in trivial tasks like this which probably is a cause of me trying to rebel against my parents in childhood and so forth and so on and it can all be traced back through history, more specifically to the big bang. Therefore every action that is carried out was determined to be carried out based on the upbringing and history of that person and this world.
