Yes it can be negative and be positive. A robber, a corrupt politician's self esteem is to be dangerous for other human being. For their selfishness use to do evil things for his own prosperity. In such a case ,self esteem is ridiculous selfish.

The self esteem of Late Mr.Gandhi of India or Mr. Mendella of South Africa , late Mother Teresa, like these type of people self esteem selfishness always be counted and respected. These people never be selfish.

So, yes and not will be decided on the attitude of a person.
