What is meant by stereotype and labelling?

A stereotyping is something that signifies specific types of individuals, particular race or a group of people through common perception. There is confusion between stereotyping and labelling that comes with prejudice. Stereotyping can sometimes be positive and prejudice is negative about certain groups of people. Labelling means when people judge others simple based on specific characteristic or indentifying other people in the form of prejudice and discrimination.

What is stereotyping?

An Implicit form of Stereotyping is also a stereotype threat, which is a fear of being judged based on a negative stereotype about a group you belong to. An example can be an African American boy during poorly on an exam because he fears if he does poorly then people will think it is because of his race and where he comes from.

How do stereotypes affect lives?

I'm taking a stereotype to mean: the 'common impression of a type of person based on what the majority believe / expect'.This comes from social conditioning (both from larger social sources of films, advertising, media, etc, and smaller ones, family beliefs, school, etc).Social conditioning forms neuron pathways in our brains, built up over time. When faced with a familiar stereotype, these pathways are triggered and the majority of our thoughts follow those conditioned pathways. Also, all thinking causes chemicals to be released into the body, so as to allow us to 'feel' what we think. Therefore we are thinking, and feeling, what we have (by social conditioning) learnt to think and feel. And so this affects how we feel about people we recognise as a particular stereotype. One thing to add. Social conditioning categorises us; it separates us into 'this' or 'that'. The emotion Love causes the opposite. It makes us connected and unified. So when we fall in love, we do not see the category of stereotype of our beloved. If we fall out of love, it then reappears.

The majority of Germans are fit and have a highly active lifestyle. The stereotype of the fat, red-nosed German comes from war Propaganda in the 1800 and 1900s. If you see a fat German, it is most likely because they do not exercise.

Are people with blonde hair dumb?

No. It is a stereotype that blondes are "ditzy" or dumb. Hair color has nothing to do with your intelligence. Your intelligence comes from what you learn in life. Like, if I had black hair and I'm smart and I dye it blonde that doesn't mean I've become dumb.
