complex,dissonance-reducing ,variety-seeking ,habitual buying behavior

I think these are valid, but I'd say necessity, impulse , indulgence. and special circumstance [like someone died and you don't have anything suitable to wear] .

I imagine the dissonance-reducing is the "anything to shut these kids up "Well, here's the cure. Tell them if they are good and you have any money left you will offer them a couple of choices. If they even ask, they get nothing. Be prepared to back it up. If they act up, walk away, get in the car and go home. Take the kids, but NO purchases. After plain peanut butter sandwiches and a glass of water for supper a couple of times they'll get the picture.
