There are many psychological factors pertaining to shoplifting. Some are: kleptomania, which is an uncontrollable desire to steal; a cry for attention or emotional help; rebellion; a learned behavior (ex - if a child grows up watching a parent steal), an "initiation" requirement into gangs, sororities, etc.; a sense of insecurity or of being inferior. Another cause is stress related; sometimes, when a shoplifter feels an overwhelming sense of stress, shoplifting gives them an adrenaline rush, which helps them (in their mind) to cope with the stress. In order to treat the behavior though, the cause must first be established.

Some major psychological components of shoplifting include impulsivity, thrill-seeking behavior, low self-control, addiction-like behaviors, and rationalization of actions. Individuals who engage in shoplifting may experience feelings of excitement or satisfaction from the act, as well as feelings of guilt or shame afterwards. Additionally, underlying issues such as mental health disorders or substance abuse can also contribute to shoplifting behavior.
