A partner or child may have died.

As people get older, they lose some of their physical or mental abilities. Things that they found simple to do or did without thinking when younger now can be difficult or impossible and they may need to depend on others. You can't imagine how difficult that can be. When you are younger and can't do somethings that you considered normal, it was usually a temporary situation due to illness or injury and might not concern you too much. An older person knows that these limitations are not only permanent but will get worse and more numerous.
