In Judaism, the putting of dust on the head is a symbol of mourning. In Genesis 3:19, it reads,"... For DUST you are, And to DUST you shall return." This also reminds us of this passage in that we shall also become dust. Acts 22:23 Threw Dust in the air Dust and ashes used in mourning a dead person. Mourning and Anger can be closely related and it is easy to move from one to the other. Paul is treated as one "dead" to his people. Custom Origins At a funeral, mourners stripped their garments to the waist, carried baskets of dust on their head then poured it over the corpse creating a mound thus marking the grave. Eventually, the garb worn was known as mourning dress, and the basket was disregarded, but the earth on the head became a symbol of mourning. After time the placing the dust on the head stopped and was just thrown in the air. The tearing of clothes was symbolic that they would tear Paul apart if they could.
