The World Health Organization defines self-care as "activities individuals, families, and communities undertake with the intention of enhancing health, preventing disease, limiting illness, and restoring health. These activities are derived from knowledge and skills from the pool of both professional and lay experience. They are undertaken by lay people on their own behalf, either separately or in participative collaboration with professionals."

Self-care is the practice of taking actions to improve one's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves activities and behaviors that promote relaxation, stress reduction, and overall health, such as exercise, meditation, proper nutrition, and setting boundaries. Practicing self-care regularly can help individuals manage stress, prevent burnout, and enhance their quality of life.

What is the concept of selfcare about?

Selfcare is based on the idea of taking supplements and pills to take care of an individual on one's own behalf instead of relying on a medical system to provide care once an ailment already exists.

How do you treat a thrown out back?

There are a variety of recommendations for the treatment of back pain, dependent on who you talk to. The optimal treatment usually varies from person to person as there are many causes of back pain, and everyone seems to respond individually to different therapies. The best recommendation I could give someone with low back pain that is not getting better as fast as one would like is to visit your local health care provider who specializes in back care (eg: doctor of chiropractic, doctor of osteopathy, doctor of physiatry, orthopedic surgeon, etc.).A very thorough set of guidlines for the treatment of low back pain was released by the American College of Physicians in 2007 entitled: Diagnosis and Treatment of Low Back Pain: A Joint Clinical Practice Guideline from the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society (Ann Intern Med. 2007;147:478-491). Anyone who reads these recommendations would note that there are many options for therapy, the key is to find one that works for you.A very brief summary of the treatment recommendations of nonspecific or uncomplicated low back pain are:Consider the use of drugs like NSAIDS in addition to the use of spinal manipulation, intensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation, exercise therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or progressive relaxation.A more comprehensive summary is:Recommendation 1: Patients with low back pain should be categorized into 3 broad categories:nonspecific low back pain, back pain potentially associated with radiculopathy or spinal stenosis, or back pain potentially associated with another specific spinal cause.Recommendation 2: Special imaging (x-ray, MRI, CT) should not be routinely performed for patients with nonspecific low back pain.Recommendation 3: Special imaging and testing should be performed for patients with low back pain when severe or progressive neurologic deficits are present or when serious underlying conditions are suspected.Recommendation 4: Special imaging and testing should be performed for patients with persistent low back pain when they are good potential candidates for surgery.Recommendation 5: Clinicians should provide patients with good evidence-based information.Recommendation 6: For patients with low back pain, clinicians should consider the use of acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (after consideration of the risks) in addition to back care information and self-care (exercise and stretching).Recommendation 7: For patients who do not improve with selfcare options (exercise and stretching), clinicians should consider the addition of spinal manipulation (for chronic or subacute low back pain), intensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation, exercise therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or progressive relaxation.

Current recommendation for low back pain?

I am a physical therapist. Unfortunately as there is not one cause of low back pain there is not one "magic bullet" for back pain. One recommendation can be to start using ice. Apply ice to the low back for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day. Avoid any activity that is aggravating. If the pain continues, got to a doctor how specializes in the low back. This way you will get an accurate diagnosis for your specific type of low back problem. For more information about low back conditions and treatment recommendations, visit the link listed under related links. Here you'll find information on both low back conditions and specific treatment recommendations based on the various low back conditions._______________________There are many recommendations available for the treatment of low back pain, dependent on who you talk to. Can children of narcissistic parent ever recover?

Narcissism is the personality trait of selfishness taken to an extreme level, and like any personality trait, it can be slowly changed through great effort or at least blunted with behavior modification techniques. While it is possible for children of a narcissist to suffer some emotional issues due to their parent being much more involved with themselves than with their child, many children of narcissists find that emotional support from another parent, a grandparent, or through friendships. Psychiatric professionals constantly marvel at the durability and adaptability of children. However, not all children are that adaptable and if you are someone who suffers emotional issues because one of your parents is a narcissist, then you absolutely can be helped. However, please don't believe that having parents who are narcissistic will automatically cause you to have issues. This may be a root cause of some of your problems, but people are complex, and if you are happy and well adjusted, then there is no reason to fix something that isn't broken. However, often children of parents with a socially debilitating personality trait like this one will find that they are emotionally needy and/or that they share the very trait that caused them pain during their childhood. Personality traits are slow to change, and doing so most often requires therapy and commitment. Narcissism is extremely pervasive and most narcissists will not recognize it in themselves. They may seek treatment because they believe their parents have "messed them up" or they can see the negative results of their personality trait (poor relationships, immoral acts that cause guilt, etc.), but do not understand how their decisions are creating these situations. Plus, you'll work on becoming more adaptable as "emotional agility" (Not allowing the behavior of others to impact you) is absolutely key to being mentally strong. Ultimately, this is what is important. While personalities are extremely difficult to change, learning to blunt them so that people do not make negatively impacting decisions is not nearly as difficult.
