It is based on the way our brain works. Our brain is extremely good at connecting events, comparing it to previous instances, etc, and drawing conclusions. The reason computers are not very good at this sort of thing is because they are essentially programmed based off of yes-or-no questions and giving very definite answers. Our brains, however, are much better at taking all sorts of data and combining it to give a best-guess answer, one that will not always be right but with enough real world experience for the brain to draw from will unusually at least be logical.
