Why was Freud's theory of psychoanalysis discredited?
Id, ego, and superego are largely abstract constructs of Freud's imagination. There is little to no empirical evidence for their existence. While they offer an interesting starting point for discussing behavioral concepts, they are not physical components of the brain which can be studied or proven to actually exist. Freudian theory is still studied as the introduction to conceptual psychology but it is viewed in the abstract and only meant to invoke deeper thought. As a scientific method for application, there simply is no basis for its use. Modern psychology takes a broader approach to analysis and attempts not to make suggestions to patients without a more precise and scientific understanding of potential behavior. Freud isn't necessarily 100% wrong, he simply expressed his abstract theorems as facts, rather than as the springboard for conceptual discussion they are currently used for. You can't state an unprovable opinion as fact and not expect criticism. His theory's are still interesting, his facts are merely unprovable as anything beyond abstract concept.
Was psychoanalysis controvesial?
In a word, yes. It is still somewhat looked down upon by Psychologists today. The reason being that Freud came up with theories that, while they were revolutionary, cannot be proven by scientific methods and thus have been labeled as too abstract and unscientific. He also coined a theory known as the Psychosexual stages of development. Which, to this day, spawned outrage in many people who dismiss the theory completely. This theory basically discussed childhood sexual drives and stages of learning based on these. At the time this theory was published sexual drives and desires were very much a taboo subject. Therefore suggesting that even children have a sexual instinct was an appalling idea to the general masses.
What is iceberg theory?
Sigmund Freud, founder of Psychoanalysis, had theory commonly referred to as the iceberg theory in which he proposed to split the human into three levels of consciousness. He said that every human had an unconscious, a preconscious, and a conscious level to their minds. According to his theory the unconscious mind was the largest part, but also was the hidden or repressed part. This is shown in the picture above as it is below the water. Still even though this part was repressed according to Freud this part had the most influence. The middle section was called the preconscious or subconscious and this was the part that was sometime acknowledged by the brain and other times was not. In the picture above this is show by it being right a the water level and bobbing up and down above and below the water line. The final part was the conscious part. This is the part of our mind we are aware of on a daily basis and makes most of our decisions and thoughts. Still Freud said although this is the only completely visible part it is still mostly affected and influence by the unconscious lurking below. Freud also described what parts of our minds and thoughts were found in each level of consciousness.
