Universality hypothesis states that the behaviour of a physical system near phase transition can be classified within small number of universality classes, defined by the values of critical exponents and scaling functions. In other words the collective behaviour of the system becomes independent of the microscopic interactions due to diverging correlation length near the point of phase transition.

The universality hypothesis suggests that facial expressions convey emotions in a consistent and recognizable way across different cultures and species. This implies that basic emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise are expressed similarly by people around the world. The hypothesis was proposed by psychologist Paul Ekman and his colleagues based on their cross-cultural research on facial expressions.
