Propaganda in WW1 could have been anything from the newspaper to a public talk. The truth is that anyone could start propaganda. Some newspapers lied about the war and would say things like "British troops cross the Rhine in Germany." (when the British had not made those kinds of gains) for an example or any of that other stuff. Propaganda also played a big part in WW2 as well.

How can propaganda can help further a cause?

Propaganda can often to indispensable to a political or social cause. It has the ability to let the masses know about your particular view of idea set. Furthermore it may often sway individuals to your cause. Propaganda's ability to control and shift public opinion can be seen in many places throughout human history. In Soviet Russia, the industrialization of England, and of course throughout the World Wars. Propaganda is of course the spread of information that is prujudiced towards a certain point of view and ignores contradictory information that may modify or challenge the propaganda's purpose which is to support a course of action. The most dreadful example of this was in Nazi Germany. Its propaganda became a tool of the Nazi goverment to dehumanize Jews.

What was the role of Media in wars?

usually the media in wars is there to provide a morale boost to the public, and to create a hatred for the enemy. The propaganda organizations oversee the media during mass wars, (e.g. The ministry for propaganda was active all through World War 2, and all media was censored) This was to stop people voting against the war, the Media is in fact as powerful a method of fighting wars as the soldiers themselves, because without media and propaganda, there would be no volunteers and soldiers, and vice versa.
