As I searched the web for the psychiatric word on the phenomenon of a person who speak to themselves who is not suffering from any mental disorder, I was astonished that it did not predominately appear first. Most people at some time in their lives will mutter a word to themselves, perhaps a profane word like "Damn!" Or perhaps an entire sentence of recollection like, "Where did I put my glasses?" Does this indicated so serious disorder? No.

Talking to ones self is a method by which we sort things out. When we are younger and do this it might go unnoticed because we are surrounded in a day care environment by many children. As primary school goes on still many others surround us in the educational environment where each student is so preoccupied with their own problems and parents are so preoccupied with theirs they pay so little attention to the lives of their children now in the new era of the two working or 55% divorced parent that talking to yourself before 18 is not really noticed.

As you enter into the college years and the young working years most people may not, while others do. The important thing to remember is we are all different. Just because one person talks to themselves about what a pretty day it is or what they should wear today is not an indication of a mental disorder. On the contrary, it is a signal of clear mental acuity and that this person is sociable and able to communicate with others; do not be alarmed.

Where the problem comes in is when a person forgets social etiquette and speaks to themselves in the presence of others as a preference to speaking with those around them. This is not a sign of social disorder, but a sign of arrogance, or simply a sign of disregard for the feelings of others or the awareness of the surroundings of which they are in. It is the same for people who pick their nose in public or women who adjust their breasts in front of others or men who reach into their pants and scratch their genitals. Talking to ones self in the presence of others is simply rude. It is not a sign of mental distress or mental illness, it is simply a sign of lack of manners. Mommy didn't teach you any better because mommy was not home she worked 40 hours a week.

So, what am I saying it is normal? Yes. Talking to ones self is not something everyone does, but many people do it. It is a method of sorting things out for some, a method that works very well for audible learners. There are three types of learners. Those who learn by doing. Those who learn by seeing. And this who learn by hearing or reading. Remember reading aloud to yourself when you began? So, do not be alarmed those of you who do. Do not be alarmed those of you who have married. Do not be alarmed those of you who have children. Listen to what is being said. It is WHAT is said that indicates mental illness in this case that should be noted. Speaking of death or isolation or retribution or anger or depressing issues or dark feelings or just incoherent ramblings of constant confusion, this type of talking indicates some type of problem, whether it be an illness like diabetic hypoglycemia, what most people just consider it to be, dementia or perhaps something serious like suicide. Listen to what is said. It's not rude to listen in, after all it is your space too.

Talking to oneself can help with organizing thoughts, problem-solving, and self-soothing. It may also serve as a way to clarify ideas, rehearse conversations, and provide motivation or encouragement. In some cases, it can be a sign of underlying mental health issues such as anxiety or stress.

What is the psychologists answer for people who talk nonstop?

Psychologists may suggest that people who talk nonstop could be doing so to cover up feelings of insecurity or anxiety.
