In today’s job market, it appears that employers are finding more ways in which an interviewer may attempt to test a candidate’s temperament, and the way to do this is to put him or her on the defensive. The reason employers engage in a process like this is so that under stressful circumstances, the true essence of a person will come out. A decent performer will hopefully not experience stress in a way that makes him or her act aggressively. Basically, the manner in which the candidate behaves in the interview should adequately replicate their behavior at work.

Here are some of the tactics composed by many interviewers in today’s job market: firstly, an interviewer may ask the same question several times in order to gage how the candidate handles explaining the same information again. Is he or she bothered, put off, or generally annoyed at the question the second time around? Many candidates will become exasperated and become frustrated by the stupidity of the question. The interviewer has thus weeded out those that act impatiently.

Furthermore, the interviewer may begin to ask a series of uncomfortable questions, perhaps something as annoying as this: “why were your grades so poor in High school?” Or “why did they let you go at your last job?” the purpose of asking these types of questions is to see how the candidate does under pressure. In addition, the interviewer may behave aggressively through body language, mannerisms, facial expressions, etc., and then he or she will make the candidate feel responsible for the behavior.

Another relatively useful tactic for interviewers is to ask a question that puzzles the candidate. This will be something that the candidate probably would not know the answer to. The candidate should always act composed under all stressful situations, and he or she should simply clarify the questions in order to gain more time to think. The candidate should not hesitate to ask questions in order to gain more clarification, as oftentimes this is what employers are hoping will take place. The candidate should ignore the interviewer’s odd behavior and see it as a tactic for determining the perfect person for the job.
