It is so ,in order to listen or feel the vibrations of the train coming. In addition to it , a railway track being a solid piece becomes a medium ,for the sound of the train ,to propagate.

Do not do this yourselfBy the time you have heard the train coming you will not have time to get out of the way.

Can you hear the train coming when you are standing on the track?

Yes you can hear a train coming standing in the vicinity of the tracks. You should never stand on or between the rails. Unless you are crossing the train tracks at an authorized crossing you should stay away from the outside of the nearest rail by at least 10 to 15 feet minimum. If you are at a station you should stand on the outside of the yellow line.

What do you if your car stops on a railroad crossing?

If someone is with you put the car in neutral and push it off the tracks while watching for the approach of a train. If you see a train coming run as far away from the car as possible. If you see or hear no train you should be able to push it off the track unless you are by yourself. Never get into this situation by never stopping on the tracks.
