In the UK, the introduction of trams provided a means for the expansion of the city and it could be argued facilitated the birth of the suburb and the commuter. As cities became more over-crowded, the new means for transport to-and-from the city centre meant predominately middle-class Brits (due to cost of fare) could move away from the city where it was cleaner and more spacious, yet still commute into the city for work/business.
