The New York Central Streamliner JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY was inaugurated late in 1941. The locomotive was a streamlined steam locomotive originally used on the Mercury. The cars were 4 BUDD stainless steel coaches and three rebuilt heavyweight cars reconstructed by NYC Beech Grove Shops. This train continued in service till replaced in the late 1940s by an all-new BUDD streamliner. NYC Hudson locomotives (steam) replaced the Pacifics in the 1940s. The Hudsons would run the train until about 1954. After that date, diesel locomotives were the usual power
