Why vacuum brakes are used in railways?
The system was designed as a safety braking system by Westinghouse in the late 1860s. Anything that causes loss of vacuum activates the brakes on all parts of the train at the same time causing it to stop, whether it was the engineer deliberately opening the brake valve to stop the train or a disconnected brake hose between cars or a broken brake line on a car or any other cause. It even works if the train entirely decouples, stopping both the part still attached to the locomotive and the part no longer attached to the locomotive (even if they are rolling in opposite directions after separating). It is also easy to provide the vacuum from a small pump in the locomotive.
