What subway do you take from Penn station to get to spring st?

You could take the Downtown C train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Spring Street (at 6th Avenue). Unless you are traveling late at night, in which case you take the A. The C (a local train) doesn't run at night, so at night the A, an express train, runs local.

Then you'd walk 7 blocks east to Broadway. They're short blocks, so it's only about a third of a mile.

But if you really don't want to walk, then you can take the Downtown A-C-E from Penn Station to West 4th Street (doesn't matter which you take) and then transfer at West 4th to the Downtown B-D-F-M, the orange line, (again, it doesn't matter which train you take). Take the Downtown B-D-F-M to Broadway-Lafayette.

You'll exit the subway at Houston Street, between Broadway and Lafayette Streets (actually, Crosby Street runs between Broadway and Lafayette Street, but it's a minor street). Walk 2 blocks south on Broadway to Spring Street.

Take the blue subway line (either the C, the A, or the E train) downtown from 34th Street (Penn Station) to the West 4th Street station. Depending on which exit you use, you will get off at either West 8th, West 4th, or West 3rd Streets, on the west side of 6th Avenue.

Sullivan Street is just two blocks east. Cross to the east side of 6th Avenue, and walk east on any of these streets (in descending order): West 4th, West 3rd, Bleeker, or Houston.

There is no need to take a cab, as you can take the subway directly there from Penn Station. It's like, a 10 to 15 minute ride at most. And it's about 10 or 15 dollars cheaper than a taxi ride.

It depends where on Water Street you're going to: the part south of the Brooklyn Bridge or north of it.

The streets in this part of Manhattan are extremely confusing, but I will try to explain as clearly as I can. If this is just too confusing for you, then I would suggest taking a taxi.

Most of Water Street is south of the Brooklyn Bridge. North of the Brooklyn Bridge there are two more streets called Water Street. Theoretically they are the same street, but their path is broken. One of them is south of the Manhattan Bridge (between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges) and the other is north of the Manhattan Bridge.

There is a 1-block stretch between Catherine Slip (an extension of Catherine Street) and Market Slip (the south end of Market Street) to the west and east, and Cherry Street and South Street to the north and south. This is the one between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

Further east, there is another stretch of Water Street, also between Cherry Street and South Street to the north and south (although Cherry Street's path is interrupted here because of an apartment complex) and between Montgomery Street and Jackson Street to the west and east. This is the one north of the Manhattan Bridge.

If you're going to the main stretch of Water Street (below the Brooklyn Bridge) then take the Downtown 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to the end of the line, South Ferry.

The South Ferry terminal is between Whitehall Street (to the east) and some street that is not named on Google Maps (to the west). The unnamed street is the one that's closest to you when you get out of the station.

Walk east across the South Ferry terminal to Whitehall Street. Then walk one block up Whitehall Street to State Street (which becomes New York Plaza at Whitehall Street).

Cross the intersection and continue north one more block, a very short block. At the end of that very short block, at the next intersection, on your right, is the beginning of Water Street. For one block, it curves southeast and joins State Street/New York Plaza, and from then on State Street/New York Plaza becomes Water Street.

Water Street continues northeast in a crooked but otherwise normal path, until Fulton Street. At Fulton Street, Water Street becomes Pearl Street. Water Street's path continues one block south of Pearl Street. When you get to Fulton Street, walk one very short block south, and you'll be on Water Street again.

If you're going to one of those little broken stretches of Water Street, north of the Brooklyn Bridge, then take the Downtown A-C-E (the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to West 4th Street. Transfer at West 4th Street to the Downtown F train (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) to East Broadway.

You'll exit the subway at the corner of East Broadway and Rutgers Street. Walk south on Rutgers Street to Cherry Street (it'll go: East Broadway ---> Henry Street ---> Madison Street ---> Cherry Street).

If you're going to the stretch between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, then turn right, and walk two blocks west on Cherry Street to Market Slip: Rutgers Street ---> Pike Street ---> Market Slip. Between Pike Street and Market Slip you will be walking under the Manhattan Bridge.

Then walk one block south on Market Slip, from Cherry Street to Water Street.

If you're going to the stretch north of the Manhattan Bridge, then turn left when you get to Cherry Street. Walk two blocks east on Cherry Street to Montgomery Street: Rutgers Street ---> Clinton Street ---> Montgomery Street. Then walk one tiny block south on Montgomery Street to Water Street.

Either take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line) one stop, from 34th Street-Penn Station to 42nd Street-Times Square, or walk the 8 blocks Uptown. If you exit on 7th Avenue, then just walk up 7th to 42nd Street. If you exit on 8th Avenue, walk one block east to 7th and then 8 blocks up to 42nd.
