Gustavus Swift's refrigerated railroad car was patented under U.S. Patent No. 308,256, which he received on September 30, 1884. This innovation played a crucial role in the meatpacking industry by allowing for the transportation of perishable goods over long distances. Swift's development significantly transformed the food supply chain in the United States.
