It kinda depends on where in Chinatown you are going (it's a relatively big neighborhood) so I will give you a few different options.
Option 1: Grand Street/Chrystie StreetTake the Manhattan-bound 7 train (the purple line), 1 stop, from 42nd Street-Grand Central to 42nd Street-Bryant Park. Or, just walk 4 blocks west on 42nd Street to 6th Avenue.
Then transfer at 42nd Street-Bryant Park to the Downtown B or D trains (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) to Grand Street (at Chrystie Street).
Option 2: East BroadwayWalk or take the 7 to 42nd Street-Bryant Park. At Bryant Park, get the Downtown F train to East Broadway (at Rutgers Street).
Option 3: Canal StreetTake the Downtown 6 local train from 42nd Street-Grand Central to Canal Street (at Lafayette Street or Broadway, depending on which entrance/exit you use).
Or, take the Downtown 4 or 5 express trains, 1 stop, from 42nd Street-Grand Central to 14th Street-Union Square. Transfer at Union Square to the Downtown Q express train (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line), 1 stop, from 14th Street-Union Square to Canal Street.
Option 4: the BoweryTake the Downtown 4 or 5 express trains, 2 stops, from 42nd Street-Grand Central to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. This station is connected to the Chambers Street station on the J-Z (the brown line).
Transfer to the J-Z, and take the Uptown J-Z 2 stops, from Chambers Street to the Bowery (at Kenmare/Delancey Street). Kenmare Street becomes Delancey Street at the Bowery.
take the Shuttle or 7 train from Grand Central to Times Square and transfer to the 1 train uptown to 59th Street/Columbus Circle
To travel from Grand Central Station to Ground Zero, you can take the 4 or 5 train from Grand Central to Fulton Street. From Fulton Street, it's a short walk to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at Ground Zero. Alternatively, you could take the 7 train to Times Square and transfer to the A or C train for a more direct route.
