The Blue Mallard was known for being built and estalishing the world speed record for a steam locomotive train. It was built in 1938 and did establish a new speed record of 126 miles per hour.

"Mallard" is a class A4 pacific designed and built under the supervision of Sir Nigel Gresley chief mechanical engineer of the London and Northeastern Railway. 35 were built between 1935 and 1938. Mallard was withdrawn from service in 1963 and preserved as an exhibit at York (England) railway museum. The last A4's to be withdrawn from service were No. 60024 Kingfisher and 60034 Bittern in 1966. Six A4's has been preserved (including Mallard) three of which are still in working order.
