In Christianity, conformist means a church agreeing with the major church influence in a community or society. Nonconformism in England historically meant the churches or Christians who refused to "conform" to the control and the practices of the Anglican Church, the official Church of England.

In this the Quakers of Pennsylvania were nonconformist to other influences, which is why they settled in Pennsylvania, separating themselves.

The danger in nonconformity is feeling pressured in your own group to conform to all issues, whether agreement exists or not. Free thinking can be suppressed. Yet the term that describes Quakers is nonconformist.
