Buddhism does not fit into the neat reigion/philosophy dichotomy of western thought.
Buddhism is not seen as a religion to many as it has no deity. It does however have a belief in a non-corporeal part (soul) that survives after death - a definite religious trait not associated with philosophies.
Buddhists further confuse the issue by adopting many of the trappings of religion - a priesthood, places of worship, uniforms for clergy, an rituals involving dhnting and reading historic texts, special days during the year associated with festivals and ceremonies.
However Buddhism does not adopt the fairly common aspect of religions of establishing long lists of do's and don't's that its followers must obey.
