Palestine's warm climate and belief the corpse was ritually impure led Israelites to bury their dead as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours of death (Deut. 21:23). The dead were buried in caves, rock-cut tombs, or in the ground. The wealthy or politically powerful were sometimes buried with lavish accessories, including robes, jewelry, furniture, weapons, and pottery (1 Samuel 28:14; Isa. 14:11; Ezek. 32:27). Israel practiced cremation only in exceptional cases such as decay following mutilation (1 Samuel 31:12) or threat of plague.
