A:The Bible itself suggests that the Hebrews were faithful to their God throughout the four hundred years of captivity in Egypt, although they had not yet received the Ten Commandments and the other laws of Moses. Bear in mind however that the clear consensus of scholars is now that there never was a captivity in Egypt, as described in the Bible, and the biblical Exodus did not actually happen. The majority of scholars say that the Hebrews were actually Canaanite people who migrated peacefully from the region of the rich coastal cities, to settle in the hitherto sparsely populated hinterland. Long after they had forgotten their real origins, the Israelites created the legends of the captivity and Exodus, to help explain where they came from and why they were in their land.

The Hebrew religious beliefs were in the main inherited from their Canaanite ancestors, with YHWH (Yahweh/Jehovah) probably originating in the Midianite tribes. Thousands of archaeological artefacts show how these beliefs evolved over the centuries, as monotheistic Judaism became the official religion of Judah in the seventh century BCE.
