Did Moses lead the Hebrews out of Canaan?

Moses was given the task by God to lead all the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. There were 12 tribes with Joseph's two sons each having a full share of the inheritance as Israel blessed them both and made them his sons as well (Genesis 48:16). The tribe of Judah (4th son) who were called 'Jew' while in/after the Babylonian captivity circa 586 BC, were only one of these tribes.

Because Moses sinned by striking the stone twice instead of once, he was not allowed to lead them into the Promised Land. Joshua did. The Kingdom of Israel was not fully developed until King David's reign.

Moses did indeed lead the children of Israel to the promised land. He did not lead them into the land because of his own sin, but he led them close to the point of entry. They were not still wandering in the wilderness but were preparing to enter. This is made clear in:

Obviously, Moses had to be in a place of some height, as well as in a place of some relative proximity for him to see the land of Canaan. Neither of these would apply if he was 'wandering in the wilderness.'

The Bible record of history has proven reliable in literally thousands of other details (over 4000 to be precise). A number of the details relating to the era of Moses have been substantiated. This makes the setting of the story authentic in its historic details although no conclusive evidence regarding Moses himself exists outside the Bible. Actually... the Bible says that God led them out... not Moses.

"And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people." (Ex.13:21-22)

And when their "salvation" was at hand [the crossing of the Red Sea - Ex.14:13]... the pillar moved from in front of the people... to stand behind them, between Pharaoh's army and them.

The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long." (Ex.14:19-20)

The Bible further reveals that the "cloud" that led the Israelites and protected them was Jesus Christ [the WORD of God].

"...our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the Red Sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the Spiritual Rock that accompanied them, and that Rock was Christ." (I Cor.10:1-4 NIV)

The Bible says the "cloud" that led the Israelites [among whom were the Jews] out of Egypt... was Jesus Christ [the God of the Old Testament - John 1:3].

This is an event that the Bible tells us happened approximately 1444 BCE, and that the Israelites conquered the land of the Canaanites 40 years later. Yet the Amarna letters, which have been securely dated, show that Egypt was still the undisputed colonial ruler of Palestine almost a century later. The Amarna letters were written by the petty Canaanite kings, seeking various Egyptian assistance and redress in fights among each other, but never mentioning a new group of people in the land. Moreover, the cities that Joshua is supposed to have conquered show no sign of violence in the Late Bronze Age. True, the Egyptians recorded nothing of the Exodus, but they did keep copious records of commercial transactions and these show no evidence of a loss of slaves or the loss of productive capacity this would involve, or of the defeat of an army in pursuit of the Israelites.

The overwhelming consensus of scholars is that there was no Exodus from Egypt as portrayed in the Bible, so Moses did not really lead the Hebrew people from Egypt.
