Not as far as we're told

Another thought:

Actually, if we read 1 Samuel 8:1-5 we find that Samuel had atleast two sons, Joel and Abijah, and it was their bad behavior that led the Nation of Israel to ask for a King to be set up over them for the first time, starting with Saul.

How many sons did Jesse have?

Jesse had 8 sons. In I Samuel 16, Jesse presented the first 7 of them before Samuel for possible anointing as the future King of Israel, but Samuel was not convinced that any of these was the right one. Jesse then brought in the youngest, David, and God (Who saw David's heart) instructed Samuel to anoint him. 8 sons. Later, in I Chronicles, the Bible specifically lists 7 sons and that David is the 7th. The best explanation I have read is that one of David's older brothers may have died before fathering children of his own; therefore, he had no list of descendants to enter into a genealogy and was not mentioned in I Chronicles.

Why was david the seventh brother?

David is often referred to as the seventh brother because he was the youngest of eight sons of Jesse, as described in the biblical narrative. In 1 Samuel 16, when the prophet Samuel came to anoint a new king, he went through Jesse's seven older sons, but none were chosen. It was only after Samuel inquired if there were any more sons that David, the youngest, was brought in from the fields and anointed as king. Thus, he is recognized as the seventh brother in that context.
