If you're looking for direct evidence, I doubt you're going to find anything concrete. There's probably a better case to be made for the existence of Muhammad than there is for, say, Jesus, but it's still going to be difficult because record-keeping was messy in that area at that time. If I had to give an answer, I would say there's not enough evidence to conclude there was a Muhammad, however there may have been such a man. It's highly unlikely, however, that even if he did exist he did most the things attributed to him in the Qur'an, especially those of a supernatural nature (speaking to god, bifurcation of the moon, being really good at absolutely everything he ever did, etc.). That could easily be chalked up to embellishment in oral tradition during the early years of Islam.
