Buddhism is a philosophy of following a way of life that minimizes personal suffering and pain by minimizing desire. There is no need to follow anyone's instructions or "learned" texts on how to do this. That being said, a person should consider potential sources of instruction on understanding how the process of minimization can be attained. The important step is to not blindly follow any suggestion blindly without all of the ramifications. One is then in the position to adopt the good and useful and discard the meaningless or hurtful.
