Holy Temple according to strict Jewish law, and no Temple has existed for roughly

the past 1,940 years, instrumental music never became part of community prayer in

the synagogue. Where it was introduced, the move was almost certainly in response

to the pressure toward ecumenism and assimilation with the surrounding cultures

of the diaspora ... a move to demonstrate to them and to us alike: "See ? We're not

really so different after all."

No Orthodox synagogues, few Conservative ones, and far from all Reform ones,

have worked musical instruments into their services.
