Assalm-u-alaikum is an Arabic word which means that "may you be in safety" and there is definitely no compulsion to be a Muslim to pray for somebody .

Salam.When we meet a Muslim we should say assalamu alaikum or assalamu alaikum WA rahmatullahi WA barakatuh and do not say hello.Saying assalamu a;laikum is a du'a and it is recommended by Allah and prophet Muhammad pbuh as the good doing or ibadah. Enforcing the peaceful situation or harmony needs more than than du'a because du'a is the weakest one.It needs action too.But action without Allah's blessing is not good. or useless..
