Answer: I suspect that the prayer must be sincere to be effective. Just repeating words without thinking - as in an electric prayer wheel - won't have much effect (in my opinion). Where I live, in Bolivia, there are no electric prayer wheels, but there is the following strange custom: beggars at the cementary, who receive money to pray for the dead. They then repeat certain prayers quickly and monotonously.

The other was Our Blessed Lady revealing to a mother that her son had repented with his dying breath and would be in purgatory for the rest of the time so he was in desperate need of prayers. We should commend these souls to God and pray for their release from purgatory. All prayers offered for the dead are used by God. If the person has no need of our prayers, then God uses them for someone who does need our prayers. Prayers for the dead are never "wasted."
