The israelites were a Jewish race, of people, they were chosenby god at the time of Moses andas his very own chosen people and were saved .
Moses didn't act on his own accord. He was following the command of God (Exodus ch.3) in freeing the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. God gave the Torah, but that wasn't "in return" for freeing the Israelites; it was the purpose for which the Israelites were freed.

First of all, Moses only saved his people with the help of God. God performed the ten plagues which finally persuaded Pharaoh to let the Israelites leave. But the Egyptians came after them. God parted the Red Sea and led Israel through it and into the dessert. All Moses did was show the people what God wanted them to do.

Moses was saved from Pharaoh's soldiers, who would have thrown him in the river as per Pharaoh's orders if they had found him. He was also saved from Pharaoh's sword (Exodus 18:4), because Pharaoh had tried to have Moses killed (ibid. 2:15) after Moses smote the cruel Egyptian taskmaster (ibid. 2:11-12).
