Saints can help us to become saints ourselves, or disciples of Our Blessed Lord, in so many words, in two ways:

1) Because saints were human beings who lived a perfectly normal life and yet managed to overcome all obstacles in their lives to become great saints: we can learn from their examples. We can learn how they prayed, how they were humble, how they depended on God for everything, and were joyful in the midst of their sufferings. They are like individual "how-to" books on how to become a saint. And, in two thousand years, there have been such a variety of saints that it would practically be impossible to NOT find one to inspire you.

2) The second way in which saints help us on our way to heaven is by their prayers. Remember, each and every saint is already in heaven. They are friends of God and are completely united to His Will.
