Mormons have since embraced the name and accept "Mormon" as an appropriate, although informal, nickname. However, Mormons still prefer to be called "Latter-day Saints" or "LDS" rather than "Mormon". Generally, it is acceptable to call the followers "Mormons", but it is not appropriate to call the church the "Mormon Church".

More specifically it is made up of saints, or followers of Jesus Christ in the Latter-days. As far as a term to describe them. Christians works fine. If you want to identify the Church specifically then it's name works great. If you want a shorter way to refer to its members then Latter-day Saints works fine. You will not run into many Latter-day Saints who will get offended by the usage of the term Mormon but just know that it does not accurately reflect them or their beliefs.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has no denominations or sects that it claims as part of it. There are several groups that have LEFT the LDS church, but they are not considered Mormons by the LDS church, even though some of them call themselves Mormons. The two best known are the RLDS (Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), now called the Community of Christ, and the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), which is in the news a lot presently. The FLDS is the group that is polygamous.

The Separatists called themselves "Saints" because they believed they were the true followers of God who had separated themselves from what they saw as corrupt practices in the Church of England. They viewed themselves as a chosen group of believers who were living according to the principles of the Christian faith.
