How did Satan tempt Jesus?

In the book of Matthew chapter 4 it says that Jesus had gone to the wilderness and the devil had taken Jesus up the holy city (Jerusalem) and had setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple. Jesus' successful completion of that "temptation" defeated Satan... and qualified Him, as King of kings and Lord of lords, to depose Satan and his rule on earth. It wasn't until afterward that Jesus began to preach the "good news of the coming Kingdom of God," now that He had just become its King, and His active "earthly ministry" began.

The fulfillment of the prophesied Kingdom of God on earth had, at long last, begun to take shape with the defeat of the "ruler of the old regime" under the world's present god.

Jesus accomplished what Adam and Eve failed to do in the beginning... He successfully: "stood against the wiles of the Devil" [Eph.6:11], by quoting the Words of God, to squelch all of Satan's arguments and deceptions.

Satan's twisting of God's Words in the Garden of Eden didn't end well for Adam and Eve [and all the succeeding generations of their children]. But, his twisting of scripture in the wilderness was met with the correction and rebuke [II Tim.3:16] of the Righteous Truth of God.

Without Satan's defeat... and a new King to replace his errant rule on earth... mankind would remain without salvation, redemption... and the opportunity to be purchased from his slave-master, Satan, to whom Adam and Eve had sold them in the beginning.

While the above answer works, to an extent, it's over looking a couple of REALLY crucial things.

First, that Jesus' temptation was not unique. Jesus, while (arguably) the son of God, he was born a man and ALL men (and women) have to be tried. Job did a far better job and had to endure much worse when it comes to "standing against the wiles of the Devil". Jesus got off relatively lucky (and yes, I am taking the crucifixion into account). And in fact, ultimately, Jesus FAILED his test, crying out on the cross "Father, why hast thou abandoned me?" He reached the edge of his breaking point and did not endure.

Secondly, he HAD to fail. While it is more apocryphal than canonical, only by failing and being condemned to Hell could Jesus show that it could be escaped, helping lead the way for those who had died before him. Because, contrary to the the teachings of Paul who butchered much of the last half of the New Testament, Hell is not necessarily eternal. It is a place of penance and lasts only as long as is necessary before purity is restored- This is why Jesus referred to Hell as Gehenna, a trash heap outside of Jerusalem that was regularly burned and then salvaged from not the eternal pit of pain and torment that some Christians like to wish upon their enemies.

Third, Satan is a tempter, nothing more. He cannot lift so much as a finger against a blade of grass, let alone cause anyone to sin or cause any sort of injury. Satan exists to test our purity, just as he did Job and just as he did Christ- He is working in accordance with God's plan, not against it. And Jesus had to demonstrate his own willingness to act in accordance with God's will rather than his own. There was no need to "over throw" Satan, or his control of the earth because he has none. Evil is created by man alone and we must take responsibility for it, not try to point the finger elsewhere.
