God spoke to His prophets through various means, including visions, dreams, and direct communication. In many instances, these messages were conveyed through the Holy Spirit, inspiring the prophets to deliver God's word to the people. Additionally, some prophets received divine messages during moments of prayer or solitude, emphasizing a personal connection with the divine. These encounters often guided the prophets in their roles as messengers and leaders within their communities.

The prophets were extremely learned and pious individuals, both men and women, whose superlative level of piety merited them with visions from God. They had to be humble, yet speak with authority. They had to love their people, yet not hesitate to speak caustic words if commanded to by God. The prophets were called upon by God to guide the people and to guide the king; and they spoke in matters of ethics, of belief, of wisdom, of loyalty to God, and behavior. They rebuked the people at God's command, they predicted events which God revealed to them, they taught through Divine inspiration, and they provided optimism and hope with the prophecies of eventual Redemption.
Most of the prophets spoken of in this chapter are not prophets of God. They are Ahab's prophets. The prophet that lied to the king was also not one of God's prophets. The lying spirit came and asked to entice king Ahab and God allowed it to happen and allowed the lying spirit to speak through these false prophets because they chose to let it speak through them. God will not stop us from doing anything we want as He gives every one free choice including prophets. Micaiah was a prophet of God who did lie to Ahab because he knew what Ahab wanted here. He later told Ahab the truth of what God wanted him to say to the king. Micaiah chose to lie and God did not stop him from doing so.
