AnswerAustralian aborigines were herded onto mission stations where they were unable to carry on a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and became dependent on the missionaries for food. They were taught that their dreamtime beliefs were 'culture', not religion and that they ought to learn the ways of the white man.

The fact that many aborigines continue to hold on to some of their dreamtime beliefs does show that their forefathers resisted the imposition of Christianity, at least passively. Some have also adopted Islam, not so much out of a sudden awareness of Islam as more true than Christianity, but because if they can no longer return to the old ways, they do not wish to remain in a religion they associate with dispossession.
